Dear Majority Leader John Thune, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries:
On behalf of our millions of members and supporters nationwide, we urge you to end the billions of dollars in unfair handouts to the fossil fuel industry.
During his campaign last year, President Donald Trump aggressively courted fossil fuel executives who showered him with tens of millions of dollars in contributions. In exchange, the fossil fuel industry’s allies in Congress have been instructed by those same executives to enrich Big Oil at the expense of American consumers and taxpayers.
Expected to cost everyday people more than $170 billion over the next decade, these giveaways increase climate emissions and fossil fuel extraction. These subsidies include century-old tax loopholes, giveaways for future extraction on our public lands and waters, and false solutions that prop up fossil fuel projects decades longer than they would otherwise be financially viable. They pad the profits of corporate CEOs and their shareholders while doing nothing to help consumers and everyday Americans. With the expiration of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act at the end of 2025, we urge you to oppose any attempts to renew or broaden the suite of unfair giveaways to the oil and gas industry.
All of these fossil fuel handouts are outdated, inefficient, and a waste of our hard-earned tax dollars. Perpetuating them undermines our hard work in building the way toward a clean American-made energy future.
The unfair giveaways in our tax code disproportionately benefit the multi-billion dollar fossil fuel industry by putting a thumb on the scale, bolstering the fossil fuel industry’s already robust and longstanding profits while slashing environmental protections and delaying the transition to a cheaper and locally-owned clean energy economy.
But dark money groups and polluter trade associations are spending millions to promote tax cuts for the rich and powerful. At their behest, the President has declared a national energy emergency that clearly favors fossil fuel energy and exports over cheaper, domestic, renewable sources.
We must stop giving billions of dollars of our hard-earned tax dollars to the already profitable fossil fuel industry. With major provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 expiring in 2025, we are united and ready to face this opportunity to defend against attempts to broaden the suite of existing subsidies for the fossil fuel industry, and pass critical tax reform legislation to help everyday people and ensure that fossil fuel corporations finally pay their fair share.
